Jim & Roma Bates

Listen to Jim & Roma’s Interviews

Jim Bates

Jim’s parents moved to Austinmer in the 1950s when he was a teenager but moved away soon after. Jim returned to live there only in the 1990s when he retired. His perspective is as a teenager in the 1950s, then as an occasional visitor with his own family over 3 decades and then as a retired resident.

Roma Bates

Roma’s first memories of Austinmer are from 1957 when as a country girl she traveled by train to meet her future-in laws, Jim Bates’ parents, who lived in Austinmer. Roma comments on Austinmer’s community life and the changes in Moore Street – firstly as a visitor and then as a resident.

  1. My nan and grandad… So lovely to hear grandad’s voice again. They have five daughters and 11 grandchildren and we all grew up swimming in the pool and playing in their garden. My favourite place in the world.
