Jim Bates

Jim’s parents moved to Austinmer in the 1950s when he was a teenager but moved away soon after. Jim returned to live there only in the 1990s when he retired. His perspective is as a teenager in the 1950s, then as an occasional visitor with his own family over 3 decades and then as a retired resident.

Roma Bates

Roma’s first memories of Austinmer are from 1957 when as a country girl she traveled by train to meet her future-in laws, Jim Bates’ parents, who lived in Austinmer. Roma comments on Austinmer’s community life and the changes in Moore Street – firstly as a visitor and then as a resident.
