David came to Wollongong in 1960 and went to sea at 15 years to work on ships and became involved in the Seamans Union then the Waterside Workers Federation. He refused to fight in the Vietnam War and was involved in peace protests and the creation of the Wollongong Peace Park. He was the recipient of three United Nations Association of Australia Media Peace Prizes.
