Joe Cassar came to Australia from Malta in 1924 when he was 19 years old. He found employment during the Depression, initially working in the steelworks at Lithgow and then at Port Kembla. This was a time when many struggled to find work. In the 1930s, Joe made sleeper plates for the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Later in life, he ran his own fruit and vegetable business, fish and chip shop and milk bar. Joe’s last job was with Metal Manufacturers.
This interview was made with Barry York in 1984.
