Joseph (Joe) McGarity is a founding member of the Austinmer Otters. He was born in 1936, and moved to Austinmer with his family in 1939. Joe had previously been involved in winter swimming with a Wollongong club, and in 1962 began discussions about forming a winter swimming club in Austinmer with some surf club friends. The Austinmer Otters commenced swimming a year later in 1963.
